Trade the GTV6 for...

Had an interesting question this morning. If I could straight-up trade my '82 GTV6 for another car, what would be on the list? The only requirements for this hypothetical are that it has to be a straight trade, with no dollar also exchanging hands, and that the new car be immediately road legal and ready to drive. I'd add that it has to complete the same equation as the GTV6, being a balance between cool & interesting, and good to drive as a toy/weekender. The dollar amount, I'd say around $8,500 based on current street value of a GTV6 in this condition.

So?

The answer is always... Yeah you know where I'm going with this. A nice 1.8 Miata should be a fair trade, right?

The standard answer is Miata/E30, but that's too easy. A later Maserati Biturbo maybe?

You know, when I got the Alfa I was actually looking for Miata. I couldn't find one.

The same car, but with some colour. Red, blue, green, black, hell even white would probably look better.

Thanks It is. That shot's several months old, actually. I've since finished out the interior (which I realize you can't really see here), although the seats need to be recovered. I'd also like to refinish the wheels, tint the windows, fully seal and paint the underbody, replace some worn bushing, install some Konis, lower the front, replace the mirrors, find a set of European bumpers or a Zender kit, and continue replacing the shot weather seals. You know, nothing too extensive! It's not concours, but it's rust free, a strong runner and reasonably well put back together, considering the number of factory parts that are now made with unobtanium.

E36 M3 Sedan, they can be purchased for $8,500 is decent condition. Not quite as unique as the GTV but they stand out against other pre-E92 M3's for their four doors. And four-doors means fun for four.

Classy! I'm sure it looks very nice. Just think how much sexier it would be with a brilliant white exterior, perhaps a subtle metallic white with a billion coats of clear to make it nice and deep...

I was actually going to paint it a midnight blue or black, but I couldn't afford the total disassembly/rotisserie job necessary to really do the job right, so I stuck with the stock color. I think every '82 sold in the US was this sliver on blue scheme.

05-09 Mustang GT S-197 v8 5 spd manual.

Cheap RWD fun. Lighter than cars in its segment(3400 lbs) and responds well to mods. It gives you a blank canvas to play with. Rather than following strict maintenance schedules.

Private party value is on par with your range. From the dealer they are 10k+ for some reason.

That is what I'd do. Spend my next few paychecks on lighter wheels, lighter driveshaft, lighter flywheel, and lighter/better seats. Then enjoy it in stock form.

I know this doesnt really compete in coolness factor but.../fordfan

A TVR. With the brand coming back, they will soon rise in value, but not yet.

You can get a S for around 5000 - 7000 euro, and a Chimaera for 7000 +

1. They look awesome.

I'm struggling to think of something that I would actually swap a functional GTV6 for.

Maybe another GTV6 with a 3.0l engine that needed a little work (to equalise the value).

Depending on the area. Are you arguing a plus minus of like a grand? I was lookin at them early that day and found plenty.

I think a later BiTurbo, maybe a 222 is the only thing I can think of that would actually be a step up from a GTV6 (same levels of class, slightly more performance).

I'm pretty certain the Capri will have a different reputation in the States, but over here they were the equivalent of Camaros. Basically cars for people with mullets.

Could you get an Esprit for GTV6 money? It'd have to be a turbo to equal the GTV6 in coolness.

Maybe it just depends on the area, like you said.

Upon further research, that seems about right. I guess my inner calculator was disagreeing with that estimate because I haven't looked at higher mileage mustangs before. I'm really surprised they can be had for that cheap.

A friend of mine back in my hometown posted a link to an Esprit for sale in that price range.

Honestly, Lotus scares me far more than Alfa.

Actually, I'm thinking I'll just wait until I can afford to get an older GTV 2000, or hell, a Montreal. Screw the "no additional money" provision.

Good point. My dad's mate had an Elite back in the day. He also had a bicycle. He reckoned he did more miles on the bike than the Elite.

Still really cool though.

I think a Montreal would be one of the few things I'd swap a GTV6 for full stop.

That would be a step up from a GTV6. I want it.

I've got a soft-spot for the little Opel GTs too, especially with a hotter engine swapped in. Give them the speed to back up their looks.

There's an Opel that comes to cars 'n' coffee from time to time with a turbo charged 1.6 and transmission from an NA Miata. It's batshit and I love it.
